Chief among them is how these devices should be regulated, and by whom.

What Will We Use When the Computer Mouse Goes Extinct?

What Will We Use When the Computer Mouse Goes Extinct?

Does anyone remember computer punch cards? Does this date us? Either way, since computing punch cards went the way of the dinosaur, there has been some version of the keyboard and mouse as we know them today. These interfacing tools have become so ingrained into our minds that it is frankly difficult to imagine a computer without them... But this begs the question, will there ever be a user interface impressionable enough to replace them?

Understanding Biometrics

Understanding Biometrics

It’s a familiar scene from many science fiction properties: a person approaches a locked door. They unlock it, but rather than using a key, a red beam scans their eye to confirm their identity and permit them access. The thing is, this and similar biometric authentication technologies are likely to begin appearing in real-world businesses sooner than later. Let’s discuss:

The next thing in VR gaming

What’s next in computer gaming?  Believe it or not smell well that and the breeze in your hair.  A company called FeelReal has come up with a mask that connects to virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift.  The mask is supposed to immerse you in the game by blowing air, both hot and cold, spraying mist, vibrating, and of course releasing smells.  Now don’t go rushing out to Best Buy just yet.  The VR mask is billed as a working prototype, but they are more than willing to sell you a pre-order for $250.  Considering the most popular games these days are first person shooters, I not sure I would want to smell any associated scents.  I am still haunted by the memory of watching a John Waters movie featuring “Oderama”.  The company says the mask does not touch your skin, I guess tactile sensations will be 2.0.

A Mobile Device You Wear On Your Head

Google Glass Gives "Hands-Free" a New Meaning

You are at a street market in China, standing in front of a display of exotic looking fruits. You want to tell the vendor to give you a half pound of fruit, but you can’t remember how that translates into Chinese. Your hands are full of your already made purchases which rules out grabbing your phone to search for the translation. “Google glass, translate half pound of fruit in Mandarin,” you say out loud, and up pops the answer in front of your eyes on your glasses.

Technology has, once again, taken us to the next level of convenience. No longer do we have to fumble around in our bag or pockets for our smartphone if we have a question, concern, or need directions. No longer are we glued to our smartphones while we dive into the cornucopia of the data at our fingertips. We are now in a world where information just appears, literally, right in front of our eyes. Google Glass uses a miniature screen to display data in the upper right corner of your vision. All of this happens as a response to a voice command or tap on a touch-sensitive bar that runs along the side of the frame. The only thing hindering our learning the answer to anything is not being able to come up with any more questions to ask.

These glasses may provide you a free hand, but be careful! In October 2013, a driver in San Diego, California was pulled over for speeding and incidentally ticketed for being able to see a monitor while driving. The case was eventually dismissed from court because the product was so new and there was minimal proof against the device at the time. This example is not to undermine the danger of products that can distract drivers, as we all know how dangerous texting and driving is, although it opens up a world of possibilities for those that rely on hands-free devices throughout their day.

As far as the release date, it has been rumored that the public will have to wait well into 2014 to get a proper consumer model. In the meantime, you can continue fumbling with your soon-to-be outdated smartphone bricks and dream about the day you will wear your computer on your face.
